Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE)

I have been engaged in a scientist-teacher partnership through the COSEE Coastal Trends project, where a team of scientists, students, and high school teachers created an online, free exploration educational module to teach middle and high school students about depleted oxygen conditions in coastal waters, which are often called "dead zones". The link to this module is to the right, as well as an interview about "Dead Zones."

Professional Development Workshops for High School Teachers

Along with Michael Kemp, I have co-developed and taught professional development workshops for local high school teachers engaged in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. These workshops focused on educating teachers about how to use simple computer modeling programs to enhance science and technology courses in their schools.

Classroom Activities for Middle and High School Students

The overall mission of COSEE is “to spark and nurture collaborations among research scientists and educators to advance ocean discovery and make known the vital role of the ocean in our lives.” In an effort to meet this goal, our team created a series of classroom activities to help students understand what causes oxygen depletion in coastal waters, including an experiment to create a "dead zone" in a small jar over a two week period (see figure to right). Descriptions of these experiments were published in The Science Teacher, in February of 2010.
